As of 30 March 2009, 9:30 PST we are working with our hosting provider to restore service to The Nethernet.

A RL Crate for burdenday

Author: joe | Filed under: Features

Today, I was greeted with a very nice gift from Riko!

I arrived in San Francisco yesterday from San Diego where I call home and also work from.  I had been told there were some gifts waiting for me at GameLayers Headquarters and was quite eager to open them. After wading through a few feet of support requests from having taken a day off to see the sights and sounds of SF, I came to the office and was greeted by this real-life crate!

A Day of Armor

Author: joe | Filed under: Special Happenings

(Due to popular vote, this week’s Special Happening is A Day of Armor)

thaddeusesper-420A note from Professor Esper:

“As you all know, I am not a young man any more. The Nethernet has turned into a dangerous place in these troubled times, so I rarely venture out without my armor. However, I am bothered by the trade-off this presents: while I enjoy being protected from harm, I cannot help but think about how much faster I could earn datapoints if I was not encumbered by those bulky plates. To that end, I have spent many days in my workshop testing different materials suitable for armor production. I am pleased to announce that I have developed a new style of armor that should allow for protection from explosives, but allow for increased mobility. Theoretically, this should result in the same amount of datapoints collected as travelling without armor would.

“A word of caution, however: the alloy used in this new armor is highly unstable and yet to be tested for long term use. So, I am allowing the community at large to help me test my new modification. Be advised that by the end of the day, the effects will have worn off. This is a still a crucial step in the testing phase if we ever wish to see advancements in armor technology.

“Thank you for your help, fellow Nethernetters. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.”

The Nethernet Shoppe IRL

Author: joe | Filed under: Features

Did you know there is now a real Nethernet Shoppe where you can stock up on TNN-branded stickers, mugs, t-shirts and more?

Recently we purchased some shirts for our ever hardworking Stewards, and we were very pleased with the results!

Mortmer sporting a TNN long-sleeved shirtThe Infamous Shyiskhar czarchron_tshirt

Mortmer, Shyiskhar the Mighty with Spork, and Czarchon each sporting a TNN long-sleeved shirt!

Currently, our best selling item is the Watchdog mug, but we’d like to give the opportunity to Destroyers and other classes alike to change that. There are literally hundreds of products we can brand and offer to you using Zazzle.

If you have a request for an item to be added to the store, using any past or present piece of artwork, make a request or share your design in this thread on the forums, and we’ll see about getting it created for you to enjoy. Your imagination is the limit!

We’ll share in a later blog post some of the more creative designs and links to those products on the Zazzle store, so check back in the coming weeks to see what your fellow Netherlings have come up with.

Survey Results!

Author: joe | Filed under: Special Happenings

Hey, Netherlings,

In just under 36 hours, 205 of you answered the survey I had posted!  Thanks so much for taking the time to fill it out and share with us your valuable opinions.

As promised, I will be handing out 500 of my very own Pings to 10 players.  To decide who would win, I obtained 10 201-sided dice (the number of people who provided their player names) and the results are as follows:

[16:26] burdenday: burdenday rolled 10 201-sided dice:  162 91 92 141 163 122 59 107 32 10

And so the winners are:

A Player on The Nethernetvirgie

A Player on The Nethernetwakwak

A Player on The Nethernetpianoalex

A Player on The Nethernetmegsly

A Player on The Nethernetherkamer

A Player on The Nethernetliamuk

A Player on The Nethernettigger

A Player on The Nethernethartleyhair

A Player on The Nethernetreaper0010

A Player on The Nethernetashurbadaktu

Also, in the spirit of transparency, here are the results of the survey!

As you will see Armor will be on sale next Thursday and perhaps an additional surprise as well due to your overwhelming response.

Thanks again for your support of The Nethernet Community, and enjoy your weekend.

Yours,
Joe

A bumpy few hours

Author: joe | Filed under: Maintenance

28 March 2008, 15:30 PM PST Update: In the next three or four hours our database disk drives are going to be repaired, for real this time! There may be a short period of downtime whilst this happens, hence the bumpy ride.

Update: This will actually take place Wedneday, 25 March 2009 at 22:00 PST. We estimate downtime to be around 1 (one) hour in length.

Greetings,

As some of you may remember, last month we had some downtime due to some disks failing.  This weekend our service provider will be replacing all of the drives in our cluster to ensure we don’t have future outages due to these bad disks.

At present, there is not a definitive time this will happen, or if downtime will even occur.  However, if it does, rest assured The Nethernet will return as quickly as possible for you to enjoy.

If you’d like to read more about the bad disks in question, we offer you a link to this article on the bad Western Digital drives that had been powering our game.

Thanks,
GameLayers
