Re-Beta PMOG: Experimental Good Times

Author: justin | Filed under: Maintenance, Releases

summary:

PMOG is going to be experimenting in the coming months and you may encounter weird bugs or good fun

post:

PMOG is a game integrated with your online life.

We’ve designed tools based on what we do on the internet.  To share a link with a friend, use a portal. To signal your approval for a web site, leave a gift there.  Prank someone for their taste in information – boom! mined.

There’s a lot of fun you can have with PMOG, if you’re willing to start playing with glowing icons at the bottom of your web browsing screen.

mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul

For the last two years, we’ve been experimenting with game interfaces across the web.  We’ve never had a better delivery device than Firefox 3. A global confederation of open source programmers has given us the ultimate platform for a meta-game about all the web. And just wait until Firefox 3.1 comes out.

We see Firefox 3 as a chance for us to realize the kind of game we want PMOG to be.  Responsive, integrated with the browser, part of our ongoing online lives. Over the next few months we’ll be using the “XUL” potential of Firefox 3 (covered in more detail in this July post).

For a glimpse of the futuristic fun we’re  building today, try pmog 0.5 in Firefox 3. But be forewarned! The PMOG buttons or functions you love today may disappear or be merged into a new interface.

re-beta

PMOG = re-beta

PMOG = re-beta

PMOG is going back into beta.  In May, we launched because we thought we had an awesome web game figured out.  Then after the last few months of playing, we realized PMOG could get a whole lot more awesome.  So we’re going to enter a phase where we’ll be launching more features instead of fixing bugs.  Things will be unstable and exciting.  Kind of like life!

Linux users – PMOG on XUL is seriously messing with your ability to use your browser.

Windows users – some PMOG overlays might not be tame – running a bit wild on your screen.  Also, your toolbar might flicker wildly.

As Alex would say, appy-polly-logies!  I wish I could say “we’ll fix that bug ASAP” but instead I’m saying “PMOG is going to be more fun before it’s going to be more stable.”

Keep your eye out; over the next few months, we’ll be evolving PMOG on top of this new XUL framework.  Buttons will appear and disappear, new features will emerge, we’re going to be experimenting in public and playing with you.  With your help we can make the most awesome game across the internet anyone has ever seen :-D

HOLD ON TO YOUR BROWSER!!!!

Introducing the .5 PMOG toolbar

Author: joe | Filed under: Releases

Update: If you are unable to download the new extension from the notification on the PMOG website or Mozilla’s Add-ons page, please use this link.

Greetings, PMOG Players,

We’d like to take this opportunity to present you with version .5 of the PMOG Toolbar.

A few of version .5's new overlays

A few of version .5's new overlays

Version .5 of the PMOG Toolbar requires Firefox 3.  So, if you’re still using Firefox 2, download Firefox 3 now!

It has been well over a month since our last release, and there have literally been hundreds of changes to our code base since then. Let me start by saying, this extension is a complete overhaul of the PMOG toolbar both visually and under-the-hood. However, there have been no major changes made to gameplay at this time. While this version of the extension is larger than the last, the code the extension uses is far more streamlined, and with the integration of XUL, the PMOG toolbar is smarter and faster than ever before.

We know that with any major change there are going to be unforeseen consequences. Therefore, we encourage you to post any bugs you come across in the Misadventures Forum, or you may email them to bugs at pmog dot com. Lastly, know that we are planning a more frequent release schedule now that we have transitioned over to XUL. So, don’t fret too much if something isn’t working quite as you expect it to; there will be plenty of changes and fixes in the coming weeks.

All that being said, here is a run down of some of the bug fixes and improvements with this release, which includes version .5 of the toolbar and 1.0.3 of the web application:

  • A complete visual refresh of the PMOG toolbar
  • The “Classic” skin no longer has a wood grain background, instead, it has an eye-friendly black backdrop
  • XUL overlays that no longer rely on embedded HTML for PMOG to work (This means lightposts on Flash pages!)
  • The PMOG toolbar now tells you how many St. Nicks are remaining on your profile

The new St. Nicks remaining notification

The new St. Nicks remaining notification

  • Profiles now update with new information every 180 minutes
  • A profile full of mines no longer takes a mine from a player
  • An armor recharging exploit has been addressed
  • Player ratings are now visually updating in sync with the rest of the profile (see above)
  • Threads no longer randomly bump themselves
  • Creating a lightpost from the edit lightpost page no longer results in a 500 error
  • A player’s gender no longer resets to male after editing profile
  • Portal taken text is no longer grammatically flawed
  • Can now crate/mine via web to a private profile
  • Profiles now show how many people have rated a player

    The new ratings count

    The new ratings count

  • The “auto-complete” feature on tagging has been disabled
  • The messaging page now has a reverse character counter for messaging
  • Badges should, once again, be issued more accurately

Last but not least, a huge thanks to salmonticker, pixielo, and the Stewards for helping us test this version of the extension.  If you have any specific feedback for us, please email GameLayers at feedback at pmog dot com.  Conversely, if you need any assistance or have any questions regarding this new version of the PMOG toolbar please email help at pmog dot com.

Thanks again for playing PMOG!

Still using Firefox 2? It’s time to upgrade.

Author: joe | Filed under: Features

Well met, Passive-ist,

If you’re still using Firefox 2 and playing PMOG, the time has come to upgrade to Firefox 3, so you can continue playing the web with us when we release PMOG .5 later this month.  According to our count, about 20% of you have yet to make the jump.

You can download Firefox 3 here for free.  Rest assured, by now, most of your other Add-ons should be compatible, and, moreover, Firefox 3 has received a positive reception from most of the Internet community.

All this being said, if you need personal assistance upgrading Firefox, or getting PMOG working with Firefox 3, GameLayers is here to provide unofficial Firefox support for you.

Simply e-mail help at pmog dot com and I will personally do my very best to get you up and running and ready to go for our PMOG .5 XUL-enabled released due out this month.  Or, if you prefer, you can post any roadblocks you encounter in this thread.

Thanks again for playing PMOG.  We don’t want to leave you behind, so, if you’re one of the one in five PMOG players still using Firefox 2, it’s time to move on up to Firefox 3 now!

Yours,
Joe Wagner
