I’d like to thank everyone on Facebook and Twitter for the outpouring of support The Nethernet received when I sent out the word that version 1.1.3 was stable and good to go.  There were many retweets, and many players wrote back on Facebook stating how happy TNN’s return had made them.

To help everyone celebrate, for the next 24 hours the following has been put into place:

  • 20 DP for each Lightpost you pass through while completing a Mission
  • 50 DP for each level you are per hour
  • 50 DP for each Portal you take

Thanks again for your support!

If you haven’t following us on Twitter yet, or joined the Facebook group, please do so.

The Nethernet is back in shape!

Author: joe | Filed under: Releases

We just released The Nethernet 1.1.3 toolbar for Firefox, which resolves a number of major issues players had been reporting to us, including:

  • New window and process issues for our Microsoft Windows users
  • Compatibility with Firefox 3.6
  • A number of extension conflicts

And more…

With these major hurdles overcome, we feel The Nethernet toolbar is back in shape and ready to install in everyone’s browser.  We will be welcoming back players in our Twitter and Facebook groups today, and encourage you to either give TNN another shot, or encourage any former players you might know to give it another whirl.

As always, if you encounter any issues, just drop me an e-mail at support@gamelayers dot com.

NoW #28: A week late, but never short

Author: joe | Filed under: NoW

This Nethercast of the Week is a week late due to last week’s server issues, but I come bearing good news! For one, last week Marc and I were able to sort through some of the bug list, and we posted a Beta of TNN 1.1.2 stealthily. The Nethernet is compatible with Firefox 3.6, meaning it will install without you needing to hack it, and the mail servers are once again working.

Additionally, we are very close to resolving the issues on Windows that keep new windows from opening and cause a number of extension conflicts. Please stay tune within the next week for the official release, which will have those bugs squashed, City of Internet willing.

As always, this week includes a number of great links of content created by you, the beloved community! Thanks to Birch262 for many of the below links.

Enjoy.

Posts of the Week:

A Player on The Nethernetbirch262’s a lot can happen in 4 months: What have you been up to during the hiatus of TNN?

A Player on The Nethernetbunni3burn’s Six Corners – The Game Of Chance #2: A forum game of colors -and- chance!

A Player on The Nethernetcuziam’s Sheep Is Baaaaaack: Your Top 10: Game in Progress!: Everyone’s favorite forum game is back home on TNN Community Forums.

A Player on The Nethernetrainboy’s The Light is Fading: It would appear that a number of classes have yet to be revived; Seers, Pathmakers, we’re looking at you!

Missions of the Week:

A Player on The Nethernetrainboy’s Portal Hubs of the Nethernet: A hidden network of Portals created by the early seers, a random wealth of information just below the skin of the interwebs. This is a collection of all the “hubs” the seers use as a base of operations. Updated with a few other common portal sites.

A Player on The Nethernettemperedsteel’s Freeganism: Freeganism is an anti-consumerist movement. It takes issue with society’s focus on buying new and throwing away old (but still useful) items. In the simplest terms, freeganism is a reaction against the waste of resources. Participants, known as “freegans,” have two main goals: to buy as little as possible and to use only what they need. Also a look a quick look at recycling.

A Player on The Nethernetshyiskhar’s IRC for the more adventurous: Most of you have prolly already taken Bunni3’s excellent IRC mission, Performing the actions it describes and finding your way to our little sanctuary on freenode. Hey, maybe you’ve chatted with us, living the dream! But now you’re bored. You want more. You want an adventure in breaking stuff. You want, like me, To be a freaking idiot and cause yourself endless pain and suffering by destroying your PC in an attempt to do things you shouldn’t. Then follow me into the Rabbit hole Brothers and Sisters.

A Player on The Nethernetcuziam’s A Social Network for Everybody: I bet you haven’t heard of some of these social networking sites? If you have, please let me know….

Please keep the great links coming by way via PMail (@burdenday) or e-mail (joe@gamelayers dot com)! Next week’s NoW will be on time barring any server-crashing antics.

Have a great week, Nethernauts!

The Nethernet Moving Forward

Author: justin | Filed under: Content

The Nethernet is the product of GameLayers, Inc. The Nethernet is fun, but it’s too expensive for us to fix and maintain. We are working on other games, that we hope to play with you in the coming months.

So, with sadness, I have to tell you all that we’re facing a tough choice. We can leave The Nethernet online, and there will be technical issues that may prevent basic activities. Basically, a limping The Nethernet. Or, we can take The Nethernet down, and save the slow pain with a swift goodbye.

Maybe, some day, if our other efforts pan out, and the stars align, we can come back here and hack away to make this game work right. For now, I’ve asked my team not to spend any more time fixing bugs on The Nethernet, because we have other fun we are building.

So for the people who have been playing, and the people who love this game, would you rather we shut it down, or leave it up without fixing it? Post your thoughts in the Forums, if you can get through.

Ongoing issues

Author: merci | Filed under: Content, Maintenance

We’ve been in the process of moving The Nethernet to another hosting site, so a lot of stuff is wonky right now. We’re looking into it, but largely these issues will resolve themselves over the next day or so. Many apologies for the interruption of service.
